What is HeyGen?
HeyGen has grown faster than almost any other AI video company, reaching $100 million in annualised revenue in 29 months and being named G2's fastest growing product of 2025. The platform focuses on two things it does exceptionally well: realistic AI avatars and multilingual video translation with preserved lip sync.
Avatar IV technology, released mid-2025, produced a step change in realism. Earlier tools produced immediately recognisable artificial avatars with stilted movement and mechanical lip sync. Avatar IV adds full-body motion, micro-expressions, natural hand gestures, and lip sync accuracy that holds up across dozens of languages. The result is not indistinguishable from human footage but professional enough that viewers focus on the content.
The video translation feature is HeyGen's most commercially valuable capability. Upload a video and HeyGen translates it into 175+ languages while preserving the original speaker's voice characteristics. The combination of voice preservation and accurate lip sync means the translated video looks and sounds like the original speaker delivering content in the target language.
Video Agent 2.0 automates the entire script-to-video pipeline. Provide a text prompt and it selects an avatar, generates voiceover, chooses backgrounds, and assembles a complete video. Fast for rapid content production, though outputs benefit from review before publication.
The pricing system uses Premium Credits, a separate currency from unlimited standard video generation on paid plans. Avatar IV costs 20 Premium Credits per minute. Creator plan provides 200 credits, translating to roughly 10 minutes of Avatar IV per month. The Business plan provides 1,000 shared credits across the workspace, and adding seats does not add credits.
HeyGen is limited to avatar-based scripted video. Teams producing documentaries, product demos, or creative video content will need additional tools.
How HeyGen works
HeyGen runs as video generation model software built around text and image workflows. Users typically start with a prompt, upload, or connected data source, and the underlying model handles the heavy lifting before returning a result you can refine or export. It's available on web and ios, with API access for teams that want to embed it into their own products.
