Midjourney is one of the most recognised AI image generators in the world, and for several years it set the benchmark for visual quality in AI-generated imagery. It operates primarily through Discord rather than a conventional web interface, which gives it an unusual community-first character but creates a barrier for users unfamiliar with Discord or who prefer standalone applications.

Founded by David Holz and launched in 2022, Midjourney grew through word of mouth in creative and design communities. Its outputs had a distinctive visual quality that felt more considered and artistic than competing tools of the time. Designers, concept artists, and marketing teams quickly adopted it as the standard reference for what AI image generation could look like at its best.

The workflow is prompt-based. Users type a description, optionally include style parameters and aspect ratios, and receive four image variations. They can then upscale a preferred version, generate variations, or iterate. The --style, --ar, and --quality flags give experienced users significant control without requiring technical knowledge. With version 6 and successors, photorealistic outputs improved considerably.

Midjourney's pricing is subscription-only with no free trial for new users. The Basic plan at $10/month provides roughly 200 image generations depending on complexity. The Standard plan adds Relax mode for unlimited slower generations. The Pro plan at $60/month includes Stealth Mode, which keeps images private and out of the public gallery -- a surprisingly significant limitation on cheaper tiers where all images are visible to all subscribers.

A web interface was added in 2024, allowing browsing and some generation outside Discord, but the platform remains Discord-first. There are no built-in editing tools, so post-generation refinement requires external software.

Compared with DALL-E 3, Adobe Firefly, and Stable Diffusion, Midjourney's default outputs have a more cohesive aesthetic. But it offers less control than Stable Diffusion's open-source ecosystem and is harder to integrate into automated workflows than DALL-E 3's API.

Midjourney suits visual artists, concept designers, and marketing teams comfortable iterating via text prompts. It is less suited to users needing API access, precise visual control, or private generation below $60/month.
