Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is embedded in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem that hundreds of millions of people use in their jobs every day. Unlike most AI tools requiring users to adopt a new application, Copilot shows up where people already work: inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Windows itself.

The consumer version at copilot.microsoft.com is a free, capable AI assistant providing GPT-4-level reasoning with Bing Search integration for real-time web information. For occasional AI assistance without a subscription, it is one of the most capable free options available.

Microsoft 365 Copilot, the business product, adds Copilot functionality directly inside the tools employees already use. In Word, it drafts documents based on existing files. In Excel, it analyses data, creates charts, and generates formulas from natural language. In Outlook, it summarises email threads and drafts replies. In Teams, it summarises meeting transcripts and answers questions about discussions.

Practical value depends heavily on how well-structured an organisation's Microsoft 365 environment is. Copilot draws from emails, documents, and meetings the user can access, working best when data is well-organised. In organisations with messy Microsoft 365 deployments, Copilot's suggestions are less useful or may surface information inappropriately.

For the business plan at $30/user/month on top of existing Microsoft 365 licensing, adding Copilot to an entire organisation is a significant budget commitment. Whether productivity gains justify that cost depends on specific use cases and active adoption.
