Runway is one of the most established names in AI video generation and has maintained its position by consistently shipping new models while focusing on professional creative use rather than consumer novelty. Founded in 2018, it was part of the original research team behind Stable Diffusion before becoming a standalone product, and it has since become a platform powering work at advertising agencies, film studios, and streaming platforms.

The core product is video generation. Runway's Gen-4 model, launched in late 2025, generates realistic cinematic video from text prompts, extends existing video, replaces backgrounds, and maintains visual consistency across shots. For directors and creative producers working on advertisements or short films, these capabilities are transformative: a scene that would require a full crew can now be approximated in minutes as a reference or usable final clip.

Runway's pricing uses a credit system. Credits are consumed based on which model you use and how long the video is. Gen-4 consumes roughly 10 credits per second, meaning Standard plan's 625 credits produces about one minute of Gen-4 video per month. The Unlimited plan at $95/month removes caps for standard video and is the practical choice for high-volume production pipelines.

API access, previously available on the Pro plan, moved to Enterprise only in early 2026, which disappointed developers who had built tools on Runway's models.
