Tabnine is one of the oldest AI code completion tools, predating GitHub Copilot, and has built a loyal enterprise user base by focusing on privacy and compliance as primary selling points. While tools like Cursor and Copilot are increasingly feature-rich general AI coding assistants, Tabnine continues to differentiate on its ability to deploy entirely on-premise, keeping code entirely within an organisation's own infrastructure.

This privacy-first positioning matters for organisations in regulated industries, government, defence, and legal where sending code to third-party cloud infrastructure is not acceptable. Tabnine's on-premise deployment option, where the AI models run entirely on the organisation's own servers without any data leaving the environment, is a genuine differentiator that Cursor and GitHub Copilot do not fully match.

The code completion quality is strong, particularly for standard patterns in popular languages. Tabnine has been fine-tuned on specific codebases, and the enterprise version allows organisations to fine-tune the model on their own codebase for more contextually relevant completions.

The free plan provides basic single-line completions, which is useful for evaluation. The Dev plan at $12/month adds AI chat and enhanced multi-line completions. Enterprise pricing is custom and includes the on-premise deployment option.

The main limitation compared to newer entrants like Cursor and Windsurf is that Tabnine has traditionally been a code completion tool rather than a full AI coding environment. The addition of chat and agentic features has improved this, but the feature breadth and multi-file context handling of Cursor and Windsurf is generally more advanced.
