Zapier has been the leading workflow automation platform for over a decade, connecting thousands of applications through trigger-and-action workflows called Zaps. Its AI features are additions to this established foundation rather than a complete reimagining of the product.

The most useful AI addition is natural language Zap creation. Rather than manually selecting triggers and actions from dropdown menus, users can describe what they want to automate in plain English and Zapier's AI builds the Zap. For non-technical users who understand what they want to automate but struggle with Zapier's traditional interface, this is a meaningful usability improvement.

Zapier also enables AI-powered Zap steps using OpenAI's models, allowing workflows to include natural language processing, text generation, and data transformation steps alongside standard automation actions. For example, a workflow might receive an email, use AI to extract and categorise the key information, then automatically create a task in a project management tool with a structured summary.

Zapier Central, announced in 2024, is an AI agent platform that allows building more autonomous AI agents with memory and multi-step reasoning, extending beyond simple trigger-and-action workflows.

The platform connects over 7,000 applications, which is the primary value proposition. No other automation platform has broader application coverage. The AI features enhance this connectivity but are not the primary reason most organisations choose Zapier.
